Met a bunch of current and former UFC fighters last night including Matt Hughes, Jeremy Horn, Mike Melendez, Joe Doerkson, and Derek Downey (Downey only had one fight in UFC, replacing Amir Sadallah at the last minute last month. I don't think the match got aired.) This was at a fight put on by Jeremy Horn and his crew in Utah. None of these UFC guys were fighting. All but Hughes are from the area. Hughes was there just to draw publicity. He reffed the last 2 fights. My cousin was a judge and snuck my brother and I into some folding chairs he hid under the judges table. We were right up against the cage. Almost got bled on. It was awesome. I'm not really a fan of Hughes as he comes across as a bible-thumping meathead on tv; I do respect his accmplishments in the sport though. He was very quiet, shy even. But also very gracious and friendly. I'd post pictures if I knew how (but I think everyone who cares has probably already seen them on my facebook page). Also GSP and Thiago Alves are supposed to appear in Boise next week if I can find a way down.

UFC is fucking crap these days. Bring back the days of Royce and Rickson, no time limits, no gloves and no weight classes. Jiu Jitsu has attracted too many dickheads in the last few years.

They brought Royce back a short while ago to fight Matt Hughes and he got totally demolished. He did do some great things for the sport but him and his brothers are not at the current level at all.

Maybe not considering all the guys these days a muscle bound nut-cases. The early UFC's are the only ones I watch. I started Ju Jitsu and Judo in 1995 after watching Rickson Gracie destroy everyone in Vale Tudo 95.

I disagree. The early UFC was a bloody spectacle. UFC today is a legitimate sport. Time limits in rounds keep the action going. The added rules keep the fighters safer and prolong their careers... Do you really want to see guys kicking each other in balls, etc? I don't. Weight-classes ar vital because the skill level of all fighters is so high in so many disciplines--it would be impossible now to see a fight of skill vs brute force like we used to see with Royce--the big guys are just as skilled in jiu jitsu as the little ones. That kind of street fighting-trying to kill or prevent yourself from being killed-is important for the sake of survival in the real world. But it would be inhumane to package it as entertainment. Otherwise why not let two guys with shotguns blow each others' heads off for our entertainment? No disrespect to the Gracies...They showed the world that you can't be a legitimate fighter without jiu jitsu skills. I've actually just done a report at university showing that the UFC would have died in 2001 and disappeared without the changes we see now.
