has anyone tried this beer before? Quite fancy it but apparently you need to travel to the to the abbey to get it. Any Belgian board members want to help me out???

Of course Belgium is represented ;D Well, it's a very nice beer, if you'll have the chance, you should try it. But... like you said, it's hard to get. Not only you'll have to pick it up at the abbey, but you'll have to make a reservation in advance by calling to them. First, they tell you when is the next time they brew it, than you'll have to call back to do a reservation. When doing the reservation you give your license plate of your car and with that car you'll need to pick up the cases. Not easy to get Next to the abbey there's also a café called "In de vrede". You can drink it there and sometimes you can buy a few bottles. A good tip: go to Ieperfest next year and visit Westvleteren too. It's close to Ieper. If it's all too hard for you to get, try to find St. Bernardus. It's (almost) the same as Westvleteren as it's brewed with the same recipe. bonbeer.wordpress.com/2012/05/10/westvleteren-12-vs-st-bernardus-abt-12/

Gert is this the one with the restriction of one case per car, where you have to pre-register your licence plate with the Abbey?

Foz and I were lucky enough to try some at the cafe at the abbey when we went to Ieper this year. It's really good stuff although I preferred the blonde as I found the 12 too malty to drink more than 1. As Ares said, you can buy a few bottles at the cafe but they had sold out when we went and the next brew wasn't ready.
