He's been an average player but such a money making whore.

He obviously doesn't make enough to feed his wife. The tuneless bastard looks like she's fucking starving.

Yeah right, you're all envious of his enormous wealth, gorgeous wive and dazzling gayness.

No, just the enourmous wealth and dazzing gayness. The wife looks like something out of a Tim Burton animation.

It's not because of money, he just wants to play football at his level. He should come to Belgium...

MLS is really banking on this transfer to revitalize the league but I doubt Beckham is going to put butts in seats longer than 3 weeks, let alone 5 years. One of the problems with the growth of MLS is that it is predominantly marketed to families/children rather than the beer-drinking body-paint-wearing obscenity-spewing young men that support other sports here. The only demographic that Beckham can draw at this point is the gays, the desperate housewives, and perhaps the Asians. MLS doesnt seem to realize that these demographics aren't really into the sports scene. The only people in America who care at all about MLS are hardcore soccer fans who only really follow the league at all because it happens during the summer when there isn't any better soccer going on. This base of hardcore soccer fans is already quite aware that Beckham is a 2nd rate player. When I was lucky enough to watch Real Madrid play against Real Salt Lake last summer, Beckham's entrance to the game was greeted with rhythmic chants of "O-VER-RATE-D!" By signing Beckham, the MLS is going over the heads of the hardcore base and gambling on bringing in the gay housewife Asians. I think this is more likely to alienate the base than to revitalize the league.

For the money they are paying, it's an absolutely incredible transfer.
Like Jays says - what demographic are they trying to pull? It's lucky this move is mainly privately-funded (to the best of my knowledge) because I don't think Beckham is going to do anything at all for the league.

In MLS the players paychecks are signed by the league rather than the individual clubs. Yet MLS is only going to be paying Becks $400,000 per year. L.A. Galaxy is going to have to cough up $9 million per year. The other $41 million odd dollars per year are supposed to be from outside sponsorship deals. So he's really only making about $9 million per year to play soccer and $41 million to make commercials. But MLS is trying to drum up as much hype as possible by calling it a $250 million deal.

The New York Cosmos is a whole 'nother story... But people here are now comparing Becks' move to Pele's signing at NY Cosmos in the 70s

And now L.A. Galaxy is holding an open trial for anyone with $130. It's probably just a publicity thing, rather than an actual attempt to scout some talent. But I would have gone if I hadn't gotten fat and lazy over the last two years with injuries. I'm trying to convince little brother Jimmy to go so I can live vicariously.
